The Best Software Demo Training for Sales and Solution Engineers

So this is not a ranking. It’s my take on where each approach is strongest, where the trade-offs are, and which one might fit your team best. Yes, I obviously have skin in the game. I run demo training myself. So take this as an informed comparison, not an independent analyst report.

There is no single “best” demo training for every team. And honestly, I’m glad there are several strong providers in this space. Presales was underserved for a long time, and most of the people below have done a huge amount for the community through books, training, events and frameworks.

HOW TO CHOOSE

What actually differs between these programs

Before the comparison, here’s what I’d actually look at when choosing between them.

01

Methodology vs. measurement

Does the program teach you a framework, or does it measure how well your team already applies one?

02

Who delivers it

An individual you work with directly, or a training organization with its own delivery team?

03

Format

A workshop or event, or an ongoing program with recurring check-ins?

04

Scope

The whole Solution Engineering role, or demos specifically?

05

What's tailored

A general curriculum, or your actual product and sales process?

THE PROVIDERS

Where each approach is strongest

Demo2Win

Best for teams looking for an established, highly structured demo methodology

Demo2Win is one of the longest-standing names in software demo training. Bob Riefstahl's work helped put professional demo methodology on the map long before most companies were seriously investing in presales enablement.

One of the ideas most closely associated with the approach is Tell-Show-Tell, a simple structure for introducing, demonstrating and reinforcing what you show.

Where I see the trade-off: established and proven, but intentionally more traditional in its approach. If your team wants a very established framework, that's a real strength. If you're looking for something broader around attention, buyer behavior, demo habits, questioning and continuous feedback, you may want to look further.

Another difference is the trainer model. With larger training companies, the person you speak to during the buying process may not necessarily be the person delivering the training. When you book me, you get me.

Mastering Technical Sales

Best for broader Solution Engineering development

John Care's Mastering Technical Sales is basically required reading for anyone serious about Solution Engineering. It covers much more than demos: discovery, technical validation, communication, career development, working with sales, and many of the situations SEs face throughout the buying process.

That breadth is also the main difference. If your goal is to develop Solution Engineers across their entire role, it's an excellent place to look. If your specific problem is “our demos are inconsistent and we need to get significantly better at them,” a demo-specific program can go much deeper.

Six Habits

Best for broader presales skill development

Six Habits takes a broader view of what makes a strong presales professional. That can be exactly what you need if your team is looking for development across multiple parts of the SE role.

DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars deliberately makes a different trade-off: depth over breadth. I spend almost all of my time on what happens before, during and after software demos: preparation, attention, structure, questions, communication, value, objections, next steps, and the habits that show up repeatedly in real customer meetings.

Six Habits looks at the wider SE role. DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars deliberately goes much deeper on demos and the conversations around them.

SE Rockstars

Best for broader Solution Engineering enablement

Tim and Jan, who run SE Rockstars, are good friends of mine. It's a bit unfortunate, honestly it's a little stupid, that we both ended up calling ourselves “Rockstars.” There's nothing bad about what they've built, quite the opposite.

SE Rockstars covers a broader range of Solution Engineering skills than DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars does. If your biggest need is general SE development, they're a genuinely good option. DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars stays narrower on purpose: demos specifically, reviewed and coached in depth, rather than the wider SE role.

WHERE I FIT

So where does DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars fit?

I chose depth over breadth. I don’t try to teach every skill a Solution Engineer needs. I focus on one part of the sales process where Sales and Solution Engineering spend a huge amount of time, where buyer perception can change quickly, and where small behavioral changes make a very visible difference: the demo.

  • My own framework at the core, ENGAGE, with Revisit → Resolve → Result as the structure inside every section, tying each part of a demo back to what the customer actually told you, not a rigid off-the-shelf structure you have to adopt wholesale
  • Repeatable process, not just technique: entry and exit criteria, an AE/SE positioning canvas, AE/SE alignment, a documented handoff to sales, feedback loops and demo standards, so what your team learns keeps running once I'm not in the room
  • Delivered live with your team, onsite or remote, not a generic recorded course
  • Every workshop is meticulously prepared. I review your team's actual demos beforehand and build customer-specific demo examples from your own world, your product, your industry, the way Great Demo! does it
  • Real demo transcripts, scored against a nine-category rubric, not a generic checklist
  • As much or as little Great Demo! methodology as you want. I'm a certified coach and can build the program around it, bring my own approach, or blend both
  • Modular: start with one workshop or one team, add more once it's proven out
  • Low-risk start: the initial demo audit and feedback are free, and you don't have to commit to the full program upfront. Start with a workshop, see the impact, add more later
  • We agree on what success looks like before we start. If those goals aren't met by the end of the program, I keep supporting you with extra feedback, coaching or reviews until they are
  • When you book the program, you work with me

If you want a broad SE development program, I may not be the best choice. If you want to make demos one of your team’s strongest competitive advantages, that’s exactly what I built DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars for.

FAQ

Questions people ask before choosing

Does DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars include Great Demo! methodology?

As much or as little as you want. I'm a Great Demo! Certified Coach, so if your team wants that framework as the backbone, I build the program around it. If you'd rather I bring my own approach, or a mix of both, that works too. We agree on the blend before we start.

Is DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars a replacement for Demo2Win training?

Yes. Demo2Win teaches Tell-Show-Tell, a technique for structuring what you say in the room. DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars is a full system built around my own ENGAGE framework, plus the process work most demo training skips entirely: entry and exit criteria, an AE/SE positioning canvas, AE/SE alignment, a documented handoff to sales, feedback loops and demo standards. That's repeatable process and governance, not just a set of habits. If you've trained with Demo2Win before, DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars replaces it: framework, process and coaching in one program, not a technique layered on top of whatever you already had.

What team sizes does DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars work with?

Any team size, any setup, anywhere. The program is modular, so a smaller team might just do the workshop and self-paced courses, while a larger team adds quarterly reviews and coaching on top.

How is DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars different from SE Rockstars or Six Habits?

Those cover the whole SE role: discovery, career growth, cross-functional skills. DemoRamp by Presales Rockstars only looks at demos, but goes deeper there than a broader program has room for: real transcripts, a nine-category rubric, and coaching every quarter.

What happens after the workshop?

We agree on what success looks like before we start. If those goals aren't met by the end of the program, I keep supporting you with extra feedback, coaching or reviews until they are, not a one-and-done workshop where I disappear once the invoice is paid.
